That is the largest of PECO’s four yearly gains from 2022 to 2025, according to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission’s Net Metering and Interconnection Report for 2023 to 2025, dated December 2025. Net metering is the arrangement in which the utility credits you for the electricity your panels send back to the grid. Across Pennsylvania the count rose 20%, to 87,579 solar customers.

The PUC compiles the report from the annual filings each electric utility makes for a year that runs from June 1 to May 31. It calls every net-metered home or business a customer-generator, and it reports solar separately from other sources such as wind and biogas. PECO’s service territory map includes Montgomery County along with Philadelphia and Bucks, Chester and Delaware counties, so these counts take in Conshohocken and the townships around it as part of a much larger area.

The PUC’s 2025 annual report on the Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards, the state law that requires utilities and electricity suppliers to provide 18% of their power from alternative sources, carries the statewide count back to 2016, when Pennsylvania had 10,632 customer-generators, against 87,980 in 2025. That count includes every source, and the net metering report says solar makes up 99.5% of interconnection requests.

Size of the systems

Capacity is the most power a system can produce at once, measured in kilowatts (kW). PECO’s net-metered solar capacity rose 18% in the year to May 2025, to 222,134 kW. Divided by the number of customers, that is about 9.5 kW each, down from about 10 kW in 2023. The average includes businesses as well as homes, so it says little about the size of a typical house system.

Applications and review times

Before panels are switched on, the installer files an interconnection request, the application asking the utility to connect the system to its lines. PECO received 3,776 requests in the year to May 2025, down from 4,071 the year before and 4,527 in 2023. Statewide requests rose 9% to 20,202 over the same year.

Most of PECO’s requests were Level 1, the PUC’s category for certified inverter-based systems of 10 kW or less. The report says utilities must finish a Level 1 review within 25 business days. PECO’s average was 10 days in 2025, down from 18 in 2024, and the report names PECO and PPL as the fastest of the large utilities at Level 1.

What this means for the roof under the panels

InterNACHI, the home inspectors’ association, estimates that solar panels last 20 to 30 years, 3-tab asphalt shingles 20 years and architectural shingles 30 years. By those estimates a 3-tab roof that is 12 years old has about 8 years left, so panels installed on it now would likely have to come off and go back on when the roof is replaced. The guide to how long roofing materials last has the estimates for slate, metal and flat roofs.

Before you sign a solar contract, ask the installer to write down the roof’s age and condition, whether they recommend replacing the roof first, and what they would charge to remove and reinstall the panels for a future roof job. Ask your roofer whether the roof warranty covers penetrations for the panel mounts. The guide to rooftop solar with PECO explains net metering credits, PECO’s application levels and its fees, and the roofing permits guide covers the borough permit for the roof itself.

If an application seems stuck, the status categories above are the ones PECO reports to the PUC. Ask the installer whether the request is complete or waiting on information from you.

Caveats

These counts end on May 31, 2025. On October 11, 2026 the PUC’s reports page listed the 2023 to 2025 report as its latest. These figures predate the end of the federal Residential Clean Energy Credit, which the IRS says is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. The PUC’s 2025 annual report says growth is likely to slow in the coming years because of changes in federal incentives.

PECO’s territory is far larger than the two boroughs, and the report breaks its figures down by utility, not by town, so they do not show how many homes in Conshohocken have panels. The solar counts include businesses and a small number of large systems along with homes. A request counted in one year may be connected in the next, so requests and new customers in the same year do not match. A few cells in the PUC’s tables do not add up. PECO’s 2024 total capacity, for example, matches its solar figure rather than the sum of its rows. This article uses the solar rows throughout.
